ACCOMMODATING FOR STUDENTS WITH HEARING IMPAIRMENT
People with hearing loss may develop some of the limitations discussed below, but seldom develop all of them. Also, the degree of limitation will vary among individuals. Be aware that not all people with hearing loss will need accommodations to perform their jobs and many others may only need a few accommodations. The following is only a sample of the possibilities available. Numerous other accommodation solutions may exist.
RPWD ACT:
Hearing Impairment is one of the 21 disabilities that is covered under the RPWD ACT 2016.
Hearing is the ability to perceive sounds through ear. Some people are not able to hear any sounds while some can hear sounds at a certain higher levels after amplification.
People who cannot hear or are hard of hearing come under the parameters of hearing related disabilities.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:
-
What limitations is the student experiencing?
-
How do these limitations affect the student performance?
-
What specific job tasks are problematic as a result of these limitations?
-
What accommodations are available to reduce or eliminate these problems? Are all possible resources being used to determine possible accommodations?
-
Has the student been consulted regarding possible accommodations?
-
Once accommodations are in place, would it be useful to meet with the student to evaluate the effectiveness of the accommodations and to determine whether additional accommodations are needed?
-
Do supervisory personnel and students need training?

Girma is a passionate advocate for disability rights. She sparked her own interest in law when she could not access the menus at a university café, and demanded that they make the menus accessible for all students in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (or ADA). Former US President Barack Obama named her a White House Champion of Change, and she has also received a Hellen Keller Achievement Award in 2018.
